Rcession: Prices of bread, other related commodities to go up by 15% —AMBCON

Rcession: Prices of bread, other related commodities to go up by 15% —AMBCON

By Aisabor Osaloboh

ASABA—AS Nigerians continue to grapple with the crushing effects of the economic recession in the country, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, AMBCON, has said that the prices of bread, biscuits and other related commodities would be increased by 15 percent with effect from October 17. The association, in a communique after a meeting of the South-South and South-East geo-political zones held in Asaba, Delta State, blamed the development on the high cost of production.

Decrying that Nigeria’s economic recession was taking a more dangerous twist, the association in the communique co-signed by chairman of the Joint Zonal Counci, Sir Hilary Eze, Secretary, Elder Akpan Jude and 12 others from the zones, which include Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Delta and Akwa-Ibom States, said “The adjustment of price is as a result of the sudden increase in the prices of sugar from N7,000 to N19,000, butter from N4,200 to N12,000, yeast from N10,500 to N17,000 and flour from N9,700 to N12,000.”

Oubadan breaks 17-year jinx, visits Alaafin

Oubadan breaks 17-year jinx, visits Alaafin

OYO—A 17-year old royal rivalry between the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso I, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi ended, yesterday, as the Olubadan of Ibadanland and members of Olubadan-in-council visited Oba Adeyemi in his palace at Oyo town.

Oba Adetunji explained that the purpose of his visit was to thank Alaafin for his presence at his coronation on Friday March 4, 2016, at the Mapo Hall Arcade, Ibadan.

He also disclosed that the visit was to strengthen the cord of unity that binds the two ancient cities together and to promote unity among the Yoruba traditional rulers.

While responding, Oba Adeyemi said he had no problem with the Olubadan describing their relationship as being cordial.

The monarch promised more cordial relationship between the people of Ibadanland and Oyo Kingdom, noting that his relationship with Oba Adeyemi was far back his coronation in 1971.

He prayed for more fruitful years for the Alaafin and himself on the thrones which their ancestors bestowed on them.

While responding, Oba Adeyemi said he had no problem with the Olubadan describing their relationship as being cordial.

Oba Adeyemi used the opportunity to advise those who relish in kidnapping others to refrain from doing so.

On the entourage of Oba Adetunji were Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Lekan Balogun; Balogun of Ibadanland, Chief Owolabi Olakuleyin; Otun Balogun, Dr. Olufemi Olaifa; Osi Balogun, Chief Tajudeen Ajibola; Asipa Olubadan, Chief Eddy Oyewole; Ekerin Olubadan, Chief Abiodun Kola-Daisi; Ekerin Balogun, Chief Gbadamosi Adebimpe; Ekarun Olubadan, Chief Hamidu Ajibade.

Others included Maye Olubadan, Chief Adebayo Akande; Agbaakin Olubadan, Oloye Lekan Alabi; Aare Alaasa of Ibadanland, Chief Lateef Oyelade; Ayingun Balogun of Ibadanland, Chief Abiodun Alli; and Lagunna Olubadan, Chief Ademola Odunade.

Don,t slash Corps Members' allowances

Don’t slash Corps Members’ allowances

IT is somewhat reassuring to learn that the Directorate of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) is not contemplating slashing the monthly allowances given to members of the Corps who are serving the nation outside their areas of origin.

The speculation that the slash might be one of the ways the Federal Government wants to reduce the cost of governance came in the wake of the steep drop in the revenue derived from oil resources, our major means of national income, which played a major role in the current economic recession the country is going through.

Apart from the recession, the number of Corps Members who participate in the annual programme has skyrocketed from the paltry 2,364 mobilised in the pioneer year (1973) to the current 260,000; with clear indications that the number will increase to 350,000 next year. It is even anticipated that by 2017, the Directorate will have no choice but to resort to four orientation programmes per annum instead of the single orientation, which used to be the norm in years past.

Debunking the speculation about a possible slashing in the amount paid to Corps Members as stipends, the NYSC Director of Press, Mrs Bose Aderibigbe in a statement, declared that the Director-General of the Corps, Brigadier-General Sule Kazaure, had made no comment about the issue, asking the participating fresh graduates of tertiary institutions and the public to ignore the “misleading information”.

We are very much aware that the burden of coping with the challenges of the Scheme is enormous, what with the ever exploding number of prospective corps members being churned out of our equally multiplying number of tertiary institutions, especially in the face of dwindling budgetary allocations.

In spite of this, we urge the Federal Government to continue to provide adequately for the financial needs of the Corps Members. Even if the current monthly stipend of N19,800 cannot be increased (for now) due to the parlous economic fortunes of the nation, it should not be reduced.

The truth is that Corps Members, with this level of stipends, are almost earning the National Minimum Wage. By United Nations standards, they are living below the poverty line, which is averaged at about two US Dollars a day.

Many of these young ones who are serving in areas where they have never lived in before have to pay for their accommodation, feeding, travel and other personal expenses from this paltry sum, and many of them are no longer being sponsored by their parents or guardians.

Slashing the stipend might expose more of them to crime and corrupting tendencies, especially as they are being used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections around the country.

APC chieftain remanded in prison custody over alleged N36m fraud

APC chieftain remanded in prison custody over alleged N36m fraud

By Aisabor Osaloboh

Umuahia—The Federal  aHigh Court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, yesterday, remanded a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, Chief Benjamin Apugo in prison custody over alleged N36 million fraud.

Apugo was remanded in prison by the court presided over by Justice Osiagor, following a three count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences, preferred on him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Specifically, he was alleged to have illegally sold six plots of land belonging to the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, at Umunwulari Nkata Ibeku layout, Planning Scheme Umuahia for N36 million.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charges prompting the prosecution team led by Joshua Saidu to apply for a trial date while praying that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending trial.

However, Apugo’s counsel, R.M. Udechukwu, SAN, who had earlier argued against the docking of his client because they had filed a case challenging the jurisdiction of the court at the appellate court was rejected by the court. He asked the court to allow Apugo continue on the administrative leave granted him by the EFCC.

After an exhaustive argument between the prosecution and defence counsel, each relying on several affidavits and counter-affidavits, the court eventually granted the defendant bail to the tune of N10 million and two sureties in like sum.

The two Sureties, the court stated must be senior civil servants of not less than deputy director with one of them having a landed property within Umuahia metropolis which title documents must be deposited with the court registrar.

The judge further directed that both counsel together with the court registrar shall also verify the sureties and ordered Chief Apugo to be remanded in prison custody pending fulfilment of bail conditions.

Earlier, Apugo had arrived the court with several security vehicles and six armed anti-riot policemen from the Special Protection Unit of the Nigeria Police, a development which prompted the judge to order them to move out of the court premises citing security concerns.

Apugo’s arraignment was sequel to his arrest on Friday, September 30, 2016 by EFCC following a warrant issued by the court which considered his numerous attempts to evade taking a plea on the charge preferred against him.

The matter has been adjourned to 17th and 18th November for trial
